DESIGNING MATERIAL FUTURES

Designers are increasingly harnessing their creativity to address the environmental crisis. Experimental approaches are essential, and include rethinking raw materials. Natural materials are assigned new functions (producing plastic from algae) and recycling or transforming waste into high-quality material (making fabrics and furniture from pine needles). Some projects focus on energy sources that are less harsh on the environment, or on raising consumer awareness. This exhibition showcases experiments and products that are already widely used, and features work by Fernando Laposse, FormaFantasma, Christien Meindertsma, Shahar Livne, Donghoon Sohn (tbc), Yamuna Forzani, Basse Stittgen and designs by manufacturers like Vitra and Ikea.
