Iñaki Bonillas’ most recent line of work focuses on film stills and their potential to become independent images, rather than transitional frames not intended to be seen slowly or in detail. Over the past four years, Bonillas has collected a vast array of film stills from various movies, which he then combines, modifies, and recontextualizes to create cohesive works that reflect on specific subjects. For his exhibition, Horizons of the Possible, Bonillas has developed four distinct series that explore different interpretations of the horizon, from the positions of sleeping bodies to lines and surfaces in domestic spaces and open skylines. The artist subsequently alters these found images, so that its cinematographic origin is slowly left behind, allowing new and unexpected narratives to arise. By transforming the isolated frames into new images, Bonillas continues to explore the history of image making in photography and cinema, as well as how we perceive our immediate experiences and surroundings.
