Die Ankäufe des Basler Museums hatten sich noch kaum ins 20. Jahrhundert vorgewagt. Der 1936 eröffnete Neubau rief nach jüngerer Kunst, während das NS-Regime die Moderne systematisch aus deutschen Museen verbannte. Diese Gleichzeitigkeit stellte Weichen, prägt den kunsthistorischen Kanon bis heute.
