A Take on Perception — Miriam Rutherfoord, Joke Schmidt

Im Zuge des zweiten Lockdowns zu Beginn des Jahres 2021 zogen sich Joke Schmidt (*1992), und Miriam Rutherfoord (*1991) vermehrt in ihr Atelier an der Hardbrücke in Zürich zurück und filmten von ihrem Fenster aus die Umgebung. Die Filmaufnahmen dauerten am Ende ein ganzes Jahr und nach sorgfältiger Auswahl, Zusammenstellung und Bearbeitung des Materials liegt nun das Resultat vor. Das Video From Our Window (2022) bildet das Herzstück der Ausstellung in der Kunsthalle, welche die beiden Ausstellungsräume entlang der Frage strukturiert, wie verschieden sich das Medium Film in Museum und Kino verhält. Die Besucherinnen und Besucher werden zunächst in den Seitenlichtsaal geführt, wo auf Fotografien drei Krähen zu sehen sind, die auch im Film immer wieder auftauchen. Schliesslich führt der Weg entlang eines theatralischen Wandvorhangs weiter in den Oberlichtsaal, in dem eine Grossleinwand und bequemes Mobiliar zur Entschleunigung einladen. Miriam Rutherfoord & Joke Schmidt zelebrieren in ihrer Arbeit eine Realität, in der es immer und überall etwas zu entdecken gibt. Und diese Realität ist nicht nur voller unverhoffter Schönheit, sondern beginnt auch gleich vor der eigenen Haustüre.

During the second Covid lockdown at the beginning of 2021, Joke Schmidt (b.1992, lives and works in Zurich) and Miriam Rutherfoord (b.1991, lives and works in Zurich and Winterthur) retreated into their studio in Zurich and filmed the view outside from their window. The film From Our Window is a result of this activity over the course of the last year, and now the centre-piece of the exhibition titled A Take on Perception. At Kunsthalle Winterthur, it becomes part of an exhibition design originating in the different mise-en-scènes of film in cinema, museum and theatre. The visitors are first directed into the small hall of the gallery, where photographs show three crows that also appear in From Our Window. A stage curtain leads then into the main hall of the gallery, where comfortable armchairs and a large screen invite the viewer sit and watch in the same manner as a popular cinematic film. Miriam Rutherfoord & Joke Schmidt capture and memorialise mundane aspects of reality, surrounding us everyday and everywhere, finding unexpected beauty and mystery in the banality of normal life.
