Explorers Film Club: screening & installation

About the work Unless:

Unless is a fictional documentary by Yara Dulac Gisler and Deborah-Joyce Holman. The three-channel artist moving image explores a liminal space as forged by the interactions of its five protagonists.

Unless is a newly commissioned artist moving image by Deborah Joyce Holman and Yara Dulac Gisler. This docu-fiction explores the artists’ shared lived experience through the figure of the trickster, who knows how to navigate an oppressive hegemonic system without fully subscribing to its truths and values in a political act of resistance. Unless explores this liminal space as a physical space, exemplified here by Basel’s industrial neighborhood Dreispitz, and asks what would a space look like if forged by our lived realities? What tools is the trickster left with when those provided don’t suffice?

About the Explorers Film Club:

Artistic research on urban metamorphosis: Residencies, screenings, publications, exhibitions

In its recent history, the Dreispitz has been a largely sealed-off industrial area and duty-free zone for over eight decades. Since a few years, the area of more than fifty hectares is in a transformation to a more mixed place of work, learning, art, life, encounter. This metamorphosis is the subject of the artistic research at the Explorers Film Club: Between spring 2020 and fall 2021, the Explorers Film Club invites six artists to each spend a month at Dreispitz to then show a new film at a location of their choice, which will represent their personal, free reflection on what they have experienced. Puck Verkade started – with the video «Cursed» in the club Elysia. Up next are Deborah Joyce Holman and Yara Dulac Gisler, screening a series of new videos in an old warehouse.
