Die Gruppenausstellung Keramik in der Buchmann Galerie zeigt keramische Arbeiten von Seyni Awa Camara, Tony Cragg, Richard Deacon, Martin Disler, Bettina Pousttchi, Rosemarie Trockel und Masaomi Yasunaga.

Keramik ist eine der ältesten kulturellen Ausdrucksformen. Das Material wird seit jeher sowohl funktional als auch rein skulptural verwendet. Bildende Künstler, die mit dem Material arbeiteten, hatten oft ein ambivalentes Verhältnis zu ihm. Für einige war es zu eng mit Handwerk und Design verbunden, während andere einen Weg fanden, das Medium zu nutzen und es in einen freien künstlerischen Ausdruck zu verwandeln. Die Hinwendung der bildenden Künstler zur Keramik oder ihre Ablehnung hat seit der Moderne des 20. Jahrhunderts viele Phasen durchlaufen. Jahrhunderts. Interessanterweise steht die Keramik heute im Zeichen der sich weltweit vollziehenden Digitalisierung unserer Lebenswelt wieder im Fokus der Künstler. Die Ursprünglichkeit des Materials und die archaische Art seiner Verarbeitung, die sich seit ihren Anfängen nicht wesentlich verändert hat, erscheint wie ein Gegenbild zu einer künstlichen Welt der Pixel und Algorithmen, obwohl Keramik auch in der Hochtechnologie der Luftfahrt oder der Medizin Einzug gehalten hat.

Ausstellungen wie The Flames im Musée d'art Moderne in Paris im Jahr 2021 oder Toucher La Terre in der Fondation Datris im Jahr 2022 zeigten diese Bandbreite der Keramik. Die Ausstellung Keramik in der Galerie Buchmann konzentriert sich auf künstlerische Positionen, die das Material zweckfrei verwenden und die technischen und formalen Grenzen ausloten, die das Material und seine Anwendung setzen.

Ceramics is one of the earliest forms of cultural expression. The material has always been used both functionally and purely sculpturally. Visual artists who worked with the material often had an ambivalent relationship to it. For some, it was too closely associated with craft and design, while others found a way to use the medium but transform it into a free artistic expression. The turn of visual artists towards ceramics, or their rejection of it, has gone through many phases since the modernism of the 20th century. Interestingly enough, ceramics are once again in the focus of artists today in the sign of the globally concluding digitalization of our living environment. The originality of the material and the archaic nature of its processing, which has not changed significantly since its beginnings, appears like a counter-image to an artificial world of pixels and algorithms, although ceramics have also found their way into the high technology of aviation or medicine.

Exhibitions such as The Flames at the Musée d'art Moderne in Paris in 2021, or Toucher La Terre at the Fondation Datris in 2022 showed this range of ceramics. The exhibition Keramik / Ceramics at Buchmann Gallery focuses on artistic positions that use the material free of any purpose, exploring the technical and formal limits imposed by the material and its application.
