Cath Brophy "The Only Way Out is Through"

Cath Brophy started this series in March 2020, when Switzerland entered a semi-confinement period due to the Covid-19 pandemic. She decided to work from home to avoid public transportation to her atelier. This new situation had a significant impact on the format of her work. Whereas in her studio, she produced large-scale paper installations, at home she was limited by space and equipment and started working on small-format collages. She defines this shift in scale as a ‘distillation of her work’, in which she reduced her work to the essential, that is, focusing on collages with few elements.
 
She continued her artistic research at home on the arch's shape, a motif she was exploring before in large-scale compositions. The geometrical form of the arch represents a physical, as well as, metaphorical passage. In these collages, she combined layers of different shapes and colors to explore with ambiguity the arch's form. While one shape renders a 3D view of an arch, another disturbs this vision with a flat geometrical one. With this ‘push and pull’ of perception, Cath Brophy creates a restless and fascinating aesthetical tension. The title of the series ‘The Only Way Out is Through’ refers not only to her artistic process of solving compositional challenges but also to the pandemic's context we are facing.
 
Cath Brophy is an Australian artist who lives and works in Zürich. She exhibited her work at the FATart Fair in 2020, as well as, in 2019.
