Concept

Videocity is an international public art project from Switzerland founded in 2013 by Andrea Domesle. Videocity’s special exhibition “Flower Power” premiered at the prestigious international art fair Art Busan early this year and it will now be displayed at SONGEUN, sharing the cultural exchange between Korea, and Switzerland with visitors and to encourage an interplay between art and life.

Six works, mostly by women artists, speak of “Utopia” in their experiences – a strong yet sophisticated message translated into intriguing visual languages. The videos examine the social norms and shifts caused by technology, while reflecting on the implications for the understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Could  Utopia be realised by sharing each other’s points of view?

Three Korean artists and three Swiss artists participate in “Flower Power”.

“Floral Patterned Romance” (2014) by Youngjoo Cho films the dance of thirteen women working at a complex in Busan, searching for beauty in themselves.

“Amusement Epitome” (2006) by Kwang-Ju Son depicts a weekday afternoon on the Everland and highlights how Western representations can become a taken-for-granted visual experience in Korea.

“Filling in Physical Reality and Living in Digital Reality” (2020) by Gyonyoung Yoon recreates “a place to belong" in the digital space to fill the blanks in the artist’s life.

“Guardians” (2021) by Olga Titus takes us into a dreamlike garden inspired by Claude Monet. Nature in the garden intertwines together, creating colourful kaleidoscope-like scenery.

“Frogs110605_2” (2011/2023) by Copa & Sordes is a project, in which the medium of video is understood as a temporal image, not as a film with a story structure.

“Eutopia” (2020) by Anouk Seabed encounters the passage of time, nature and humans, reality, and the virtual world through colourful images that are sometimes calming and sometimes intense.

Each video guides the viewers to explore the inner and outer perception of self-awareness in their own unique way. Following this invitation, we can take the time to reflect on what we can do now to make the world better. “Flower Power” creates new connections and inspires us to be connected to ourselves and with others.

All videos will be shown onto the SONGEUN outdoor screen – free of charge – without their original soundtrack. Life in Seoul shapes the sound: The surroundings influence our perception of the videos and vice versa, the videos allow us to experience the surroundings in a new light.  A mutual inspiration of art and life.

We invite you to go on a journey of discovery with Videocity "Flower Power".
